Stallion news
The end of 2008 saw the Klawervlei sires maintain their trend of success as they had done throughout this last year.
National Emblem’s offspring have enjoyed success in numerous feature races during 2008, and his daughter, Emblem of Liberty, has been one of his mainstays. She won the Gr2 Ipi Tombe Challenge in good style for Geoff Woodruff. Amongst the beaten fillies were promising de Kock runner Milk and Honey, Gr1 winner Gypsy’s Warning and last time out feature race winner Prestic. Emblem of Liberty, who has now won four stakes races, will now be aimed at the Paddock Stakes, where she will take on the champion Dancer’s Daughter. Her dam, Dafka, is by French classic winner Kendor – also broodmare sire of champion Marchand D’Or.

The multiple Gr1 winning Buy And Sell is arguably National Emblem’s best son. He again showed his class when outclassing his opposition to win a plate race at Turffontein over 1600 meters. He proved far too strong for the stakes performers Ray Sauce and Buscador, despite carrying joint top weight, and will now face Pocket Power in the Queen’s Plate and J&B Met. A half-brother to Gr1 winner Count The Money, Buy And Sell has now won just a shade under R2 million.
Langley made it three wins when a row, when accounting the Gr3 placed Corlia’s Venture over the Fairview’s 2000 meter course. The gelding made up ground to down a small but competitive field to land his sixth career win. From the family of London News and Kings Gambit, Langley;s dam, Highlyconfidential is a daughter of champion sire and broodmare sire Northern Guest.
Superlative, who was backed into favouritism, made a winning debut for Charles Laird at Turffontein, when he pulled clear of Officer Class to win by a couple of lengths. Charles Laird has done very well with the progeny of his old stalwart runner and Superlative could be yet another son of National Emblem to go on to bigger and better things for Laird. Superlative’s dam, Military Mission, is a three parts sister to Gold Vase winner Fantasy Warrior.
European Treasure showed improvement when stepped up to 1400 meters to break her maiden tag at the third time of asking. She hit the front just after turning for home and, under a confident Greg Cheyne ride, never looked like being caught. She is trained by Basil Marcus. Her dam, Balsam, is by leading sire and broodmare sire Cadeaux Genereux. From the powerful Lady Be Good family, European Treasure has the pedigree to be a sought after broodmare in time.
Another National Emblem filly to win well during the past month was Golden Secret. Making just her second racecourse appearance, Golden Secret made all of the running to by two and a quarter lengths from subsequent winner Hazy Grey. Golden Secret won well over the 1000 meters, and clearly has plenty of toe. She is trained by Weiho Marwing. Golden Secret’s dam, Spring Rites, is a daughter of Golden Thatch and Oaks winner Spring Wonder.
Other winners for National Emblem during December included Model of Love and What I Really Mean.
Captain Al continues to prove popular. Justin Snaith has certainly trained his fair share of the progeny of Captain Al to win races. One of these is Al Bulli, who landed his second race, when getting up late to beat Nomandla by a short head. Al Bulli is out of the winning Damascus Gate mare Food for the Gods.
Another leading Cape trainer to have built up a fine record with the progeny of Captain Al is Vaughan Marshal. The latter trains Zodiac Attack, who won his fourth race this month over 1200 meters at Kenilworth. Zodiac Attack produced a good finish to fly up and defeat the very talented Snow Drift. His dam, Intrigue, is a winning half sister to Face North.
Sealed Orders confirmed the promise of his debut run when running out a comfortable winner second time. The colt, who was beaten only by the useful Fingal’s Cave on debut, produced a fine turn of foot to defeat subsequent winner National Anthem by half a length. The runner up, a full brother to National Colour, is well regarded by connections and this form could prove useful. The well named Sealed Orders was produced by the three time winning Freedom Land mare State Secret.
Sealed Orders: Owned by Messrs P H Gilliomee, C Sanders and J Thomson. Trained by Piet Steyn and bred by Zandvliet Stud
Other winners for Captain Al in December include Private Affair, Luna Rossa and Cabernet Al.
Requiem is the sire of the smart filly Thundering Lady. The latter gave her trainer Mike Azzie a double when winning under lights at Greyville. Lightly raced, Thundering Lady was given a great ride by Robbie Hill to get up to win narrowly. She has now won two of her five starts. Prior to this win, she had finished fifth in the Emperor’s Palace Ready To Run Stakes. She is out of the Muhtafal mare Qurrah.
Casey Tibbs was represented by a handful of winners in December. After running the talented Candy Singer to a neck, Bikini Miss always looked a winner in waiting. She duly won, comfortably at the third time of asking. Showing her appreciation of a step up in trip, Bikini Miss cruised home by over two lengths. She is out of the stakes placed Centenary mare, Summertan.
Dynamite Casey, who showed ability as a juvenile, was rated highly enough to take her chances in the Gr2 Odessa Fillies Championship. Dropping down in class for her next start, Dynamite Casey won well at her next start over Kenilworth’s 1200 meters.
Geoff Woodruff has enjoyed plenty of success with Casey Tibbs filly. Another to win for the former champion trainer was Windward. Making just her second start, she quickened up well to win going away. She looks to have ability and should to pay to follow. Windward is out of the Elliodor mare, Entice The Wind, and is from the family of top racemare and broodmare Grecian Gale.
Sunshine Star had been very consistent prior to breaking her maiden. She had been placed in her last four starts and was sent off favourite to win at the eighth time of asking. She produced a good turn of foot to defeat Prima Donna by half a length.
Sunshine Star is out of the useful Jungle Rock matron, Eastbound.
Sunshine Star - Bred by Oldlands Stud, Owned by Mr H Adams, trained by Darryl Hodgson and ridden by Karl Neisius
Martinelli is the sire of Elegant Aspen. The Team Valor owned mare won her third race when powering clear of Unfurling to win by nearly five lengths. A useful sort, the Justin Snaith trained Elegant Aspen had been the sole of consistency being placed in four of her five previous outings. Her dam, Elegant Elizabeth, is a daughter of outstanding broodmare sire Badger Land.
