Grand West Sale reaches a pleasing R12 million aggregate

THE aggregate of R12 million recorded at Sunday’s GrandWest Yearling Sale in Cape Town was down 9% on last year’s R13,217 million, but Bloodstock SA’s Chief Executive Jan Naudé was pleased considering the prevailing economic climate.
Naudé analysed the sales figures and commented: “We’ve seen the turnovers of bloodstock sales elsewhere in the world decline by up to 50% recently which means that we can be proud of what was achieved at GrandWest.
``It is important also to keep in mind that this was a smaller auction, 27,8% smaller than last year yet the lots sold was only down by 16,8% on last year.
``It was encouraging too that breeders were willing to let their yearlings go more readily. Our pass-out rate of 84% was 4% up on last year and the average price per foal of R78 341 was 9,2% up on last year’s R71 834.’’
Victor Silvester, a smashing colt by Silvano from Blue Acres (x Badger Land) fetched the highest sale price of R450 000, sold to Robert Bloomberg and partners who own his Cape Derby-placed half-brother, Bluemambo.
``He’s a very nice specimen,’’ said Bloomberg, who will be entrusting the colt to trainer Patrick Kruyer, who also stables Bluemambo. Victor Silvester will be returning temporarily to Carole and Martyn Doggrell’s Netherfield Stud near Greyton. The Doggrells, formerly from Zimbabwe, also consigned Lot 141, Alfie Moon, a R300 000 purchase for owner Chris van Niekerk. This took Netherfield Stud to the top of the list of vendors by average.
``There was good competition among buyers for the better-bred horses,’’ told auctioneer Andrew Miller, whose hammer fell on Victor Silvester.
Trainer Dominic Zaki won the tussle for the second-highest lot, Avontuur-bred Eversoeasy, a filly by VAR from the potent, so-called “E” family. “I have two nice VARs at home and we came to buy this beautiful filly. VAR will be a top stallion,’’ Zaki said.
VAR topped the list of sires by aggregate with seven yearlings sold for R1,235 million at an average of R176 429 per lot.
Trainer Joey Ramsden’s Good Hope Racing, always active at the GrandWest Sale, bought seven lots for R955 000 and headed the list of buyers by aggregate.
Dean Kannemeyer, who secured five yearlings at R125 000 per purchase, commented: ``I bought a few on spec in the R100 – 200 000 bracket because this was a sale of decent quality and I considered them bargain buys considering the economic conditions.’’
