The annual Cape breeders and WPOTA awards ceremony took place at Kenilworth Racecourse last night. The black tie affair honours horses and horseman of South Africa’s Western Cape racing and breeding chapter.

The awards themselves yielded no surprises from that of the national equivalent. Pocket Power was crowned Horse of the Year, older male of the year, and middle distance champion for the third year running. Big City Life (by Casey Tibbs), was awarded 3 year old Champion male for his exceptional achievement in attaining 3 group 1 victories including the Vodacom Durban July, and could be considered unlucky to have bumped Pocket Power to deny a clean sheet. Champion filly Lady Windermere clinched three awards on the evening for her outstanding season.

Champion trainer went to Mike Bass for the third consecutive year while trainer Glen Kotzen was awarded a special achievement award for his outstanding 2009 season.

Captain Al was awarded the special Stallion award for his record breaking 127 winners this past season with stakes of R9 470 865 stakes earned from his 823 starts. Daughter of Captain Al and Debutante Gr2 winner Captain’s Call, was crowned Juvenile Filly of the year while the gr1 winning premiers champion Exhilaration was a close nominee for 2 yo colt. The progeny of Captain Al received a further boost with three further nominations. Among them, listed stakes winner Cool Zone, Gr3 fillies nursery winner Flowers Angel and the Snaith trained Irridescence stakes winner Me ‘n You.

Flying high for National Emblem was Emblem Of Liberty who was awarded Cape Breeders older female champion after her victories in the Gr1 Paddock Stakes, Gr2  Ipi Tombi Challenge, and listed renounce Stakes victories.
