The 2008/2009 Equus Awards ceremony, or often referred to as the “The Oscars” of South African Racing was held at the Emperor’s Palace Casino in Gauteng on Thursday night.  It turned out to be a successful night for Klawervlei Stud as Captain Al and Rebel King were both honoured in their various categories.

Rebel King, , secured the title of Champion Sprinter after concluding his final racing season with a group 1 victory in the Cape Flying Championship and the Grade 2 Senor Santa Handicap. The newly acquired son of National Emblem now adds an honourable  title to his résumé when he stands at Stud for the first time this season for a fee of R10 000.

Captain Al received the Outstanding Stallion Achievement Award for his record breaking 127 winners this past season with stakes of R9 470 865 stakes earned from his 823 starts. The future looks bright for the homebred stallion and with his exceptional crop contending the 2010 season he will have his eye firmly on the title of Champion Stallion this year.

Klawervlei sire Casey Tibbs received an honourable boost when he sired the winner of Champion 3 year old colt Big City Life. The young sensation won the Durban July Handicap and only just fell short to rival Pocket Power for title of 2009 Horse Of The Year.

Markus Jooste and his wife Ingrid, took the great honour of Owner Of The Year for their more than 100 winners in a season while trainer Charles Laird secured the title of Champion Trainer.
