Outstanding sprinter ,Seventh Rock, has been retired to Klawervlei Stud to commence his stud career.  An Aus $ 1,025,000 yearling,  Seventh Rock was as good a looking yearling as you would see anywhere in the world.  Sent into training with Charles Laird, from nine South African starts, Seventh Rock won 6, was placed 2nd twice and ran 3rd once.  Seventh Rock made an impressive debut when scooting home by 2.5 lengths.

Equus Awards: Rebel King / Captain Al fly the flag for Klawervlei

The 2008/2009 Equus Awards ceremony, or often referred to as the “The Oscars” of South African Racing was held at the Emperor’s Palace Casino in Gauteng on Thursday night.  It turned out to be a successful night for Klawervlei Stud as Captain Al and Rebel King were both honoured in their various categories.   Rebel King, , secured the title of Champion Sprinter after concluding his final racing season with a group 1 victory in the Cape Flying Championship and the Grade 2 Senor Santa Handicap.The newly acquired son of National Emblem now adds an honourable  title to his résumé when he stands at Stud for the first time this season for a fee of R10 000.   Captain Al received the Outstanding Stallion Achievement Award for his record breaking 127 winners this past season with stakes of R9 470 865 stakes earned from his 823 starts.

Captain`s Lover storms home by 7 in The Matchmaker

  Team Valor International’s Captain’s Lover scored a facile 7-length victory this afternoon on a rainy afternoon at Monmouth Park, when she stayed in the field for the Grade 3 Matchmaker Stakes, even though the $200,000 fixture was taken off the grass following a significant downpour.   Trainer Todd Pletcher and Team Valor owner Barry Irwin analyzed the four remaining entrants and decided to give the race a go.“Her sire, Captain Al, sires the most American-like offspring of any stallion in South Africa,” noted Irwin, “and the broodmare sire, Badger Land, was an American dirt colt.

Gr1 for Exhilaration in Champion Stakes

Exhilaration, the son of Captain Al, notched up the first grade 1 of his career when fighting out a close finish with Bulsara in the grade 1 Premiers Champion Stakes on Saturday.   The 2 year old colt trained by Dominic Zaki entered this race with excellent credentials from his 4 career starts.After an imposing victory on debut he followed up with two close seconds in the Gr2 Nursery and the Gr1Gold Reef Resorts Medallion before following up with another convincing display over a touch more ground in a juvenile at Turffontein the following month.

  South Africa’s champion 3 year old colt, Big City Life stole the show after the favourite Pocket Power fluffed his lines in the running of the 2009 Vodacom Durban July.   Victory for the impressive Casey Tibbs colt has now seen him complete successive group 1 victories and this great win will have ensured the colt as the prime contender to Pocket Power for the 2009 title of Horse Of The Year.After convincing successes in the grade 3 Kwa-Zulu Natal Guineas, the grade 2 Daily News and the ultimate group 1, the Vodacom Durban July he has now emulated the great feat of the champion racehorse Dynasty in his 3 year old year season.   Trained by Glen Kotzen for the syndicate of owners Raymond Deacon, Andre Hauptfleisch, Glen Mitchell, Henni Basson and Kotzen himself, who purchased the colt from Bloodstock agent Tony Warren off the 2007 Equimark Ready To Run Sale for R170 000.

Martinelli to relocate at Cash Truter

The Klawervlei based Sire Martinelli has moved homes and will now be standing at the stud of Mr H R Truter, or better known in the industry as Cash Truter, A commodity trader and farmer by trade, the Truter family have been involved in horses for more than five generations traceable in South Africa, and the Kroonstad farmer is ecstatic with his new acquisition.   Martinelli is by the Champion 3Yo in the USA Thunder Gulch out Fall Aspen (broodmare of the century) and is the half brother to the champion and Sire of Sires Fort Wood.     Martinelli now stands at the truter stud     Cash believes strongly in Martinelli’s affinity with Northern Dancer and most of the mares he will be put to, are mares that have Northern Dancer close up on both sides of their pedigree.“In the long term my aim will be to breed the progeny back to Northern Dancer sires” said Cash.   At this stage Truter will be standing Martinelli for R1000 nomination fee and R5000 for a live foal.

Big City Life a big July prospect

Big City Life added to his already impressive career tally by snatching the Korea Racing Association KZN Guineas run under lights at Greyville on Tuesday.The Glen Kotzen trained son of Casey Tibbs (Klawervlei Stud) was given a superbly confident ride by jockey Bernard Bayd’Herbe and judging by the facile fashion by which he won stamps him as the leading three year old contender for this years Durban July. The impressive bay scooped his first group 1 accolade in his penultimate start at Kenilworth when triumphing over Bluemambo in the Investec Cape Derby and in doing so also became the first group 1 winning son of his sire Casey Tibbs.  Big City Life was bred by trainer Glen Kotzen’s mother in law Judy Wintle, before being purchased by bloodstock agent Tony Warren off the 2007 Equimark ready To Run Sale. Trainer Glen Kotzen has a very smart individual on his hands and his preparation is heading down a perfect going into the Durban July.

Captain Al’s progeny just continue to fire on all cylinders, and the Klawervlei Sire produced another group 2 double with Captains Call (Grade 2 Debutante Stakes) and Flower’s Angel (Grade 3 Fillies Nursery) winning this weekend. .   .  Flower’s Angel – Grade 3 Fillies Nursery (Kenilworth)   She's aptly named for a Nursery winner and Flower's Angel is now unbeaten in two starts after winning the fillies' version  of this Betting World-sponsored event over 1200m at Kenilworth on Saturday, leading home Possible Dream (SAF) and Baltic Beauty.   Flower's Angel is a 2-year-old filly by Captain Al (SAF) out of Dragon Flower (SAF) by National Assembly (CAN).She is owned by Mrs D S Marcus and Newbury Racing (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Mr D E Evans) and was bred by Mr B Marcus. Winning Trainer: Basil Marcus          Captains call – Grade 2 Debutante (Scottsville)   Captain's Call (SAF - pictured, far side) showed plenty of courage to land the Gr 2 Debutante over 1200m at Scottsville on Sunday, just doing enough to hold off Dijla (AUS) with Passive Resistance (SAF) and Fairy Queen (SAF) following them home. Naudé analysed the sales figures and commented: “We’ve seen the turnovers of bloodstock sales elsewhere in the world decline by up to 50% recently which means that we can be proud of what was achieved at GrandWest. ``It is important also to keep in mind that this was a smaller auction, 27,8% smaller than last year yet the lots sold was only down by 16,8% on last year. ``It was encouraging too that breeders were willing to let their yearlings go more readily.Our pass-out rate of 84% was 4% up on last year and the average price per foal of R78 341 was 9,2% up on last year’s R71 834.’’ Victor Silvester, a smashing colt by Silvano from Blue Acres (x Badger Land) fetched the highest sale price of R450 000, sold to Robert Bloomberg and partners who own his Cape Derby-placed half-brother, Bluemambo.``He’s a very nice specimen,’’ said Bloomberg, who will be entrusting the colt to trainer Patrick Kruyer, who also stables Bluemambo.

The 2009 Klawervlei golf day took place under perfect conditions at the Pearl Valley Golf Estate in the Franschhoek valley yesterday.   The day has cemented itself as a prerequisite in the build up to the J&B Met and provides Klawervlei Stud with the opportunity to express their appreciation to the racing community for their grateful support throughout the year.   A great day was had by all concerned and congratulations to Richard Taylors’ four ball who won with a magnificent score of 88 alliance stableford points.   A big thank you to Graeme Hawkins, Mike Bass, Joey Ramsdon and Sean Tarry who made up the panel for a very interesting and entertaining J&B Met discussion and of course our deepest gratitude to Steinhoff, BBR Bloodstock, Old Mutual, Lexus, Magic Millions and Inglis for their kind sponsorship.Without them, this day would not be possible.   Furthermore, a special word of thanks to Ken Truter who put up the highest bid of R110 000 for the racing career of our Dahlias Legacy filly which went up for auction.

Emblem Of Liberty wins GR1 Paddock Stakes for National Emblem

Emblem Of Liberty ran the race of her life and defied all odds to land possibly South Africa’s richest race for fillies when she won the Grade 1 Paddock Stakes at Kenilworth this weekend.       The daughter of the Klawervlei based stallion, National Emblem, saw out the testing nine furlong trip comfortably one her first attempt to finish ahead of River Jetez and Equine hero Dancers Daughter who could only manage to place in third. The Gauteng raider has burst onto the big race scene after having come off two facile group victories in the Renounce Stakes and the Ipi Tombi stakes in Gauteng and came into the race a very fit horse said trainer Geoff Woodfuff.He was thrilled at the fillies surprise win but said that she had deserved a shot at the paddock stakes after her recent success.
